"I started coming to hot yoga recommended by a friend after a severe car accident in Jan 2004. A double decker bus went into the side of my car at 40 mph, writing it off. The impact knocked my head into the window frame of the car giving me a skull fracture, severe whiplash and damage to my spine, especially the neck where several vertebrae were completely turned round. Later, my osteopath told me that I almost had my head knocked off and I was quite lucky to walk out alive.
After several months of cranial osteopathy and rest I badly needed to do something to exercise and regain self esteem. I had been very fit most of my life working as a physical theatre performer for over twenty years, but I put on a lot of weight quickly from depression and being unable to exercise in the way I was used to.
During the last six months I have been coming to hot yoga regularly and have regained a great deal of flexibility in my spine and neck. The increased flexibility and healing benefits have also contributed to relieving much of the pain I was still feeling when I first started coming to yoga. I'm still having osteopathy for my neck and there are two postures still that I can't manage but this is improving all the time. The osteopath loves hot yoga because she can get much better results out of my back during our sessions as the heat gets everything loose and stretched. I've lost over a stone in weight and am still losing which is great for the self esteem. The teachers at Bikram have also been so encouraging and supportive, providing an incredibly positive atmosphere in which to practise and challenge oneself.
So, many thanks to all at Bikram Brighton for your encouragement and support to me personally - it has helped me to walk tall again!"
