In Bikram Yoga, we work in front of mirrors to help with skeletal alignment and general body awareness. It might take some courage to look at yourself for 90 minutes - so don’t be surprised if you feel a little uncomfortable with this at first. After a few classes you will find yourself not wanting to hide at the back of the room. It becomes easier to balance and to meditate as you develop an external ‘dristi’ (point of focus) on your own eyes reflected in the mirror.
You will notice the carpet has stripes on it; this is to line up your yoga mat to act as a guide for your feet so you know you are working the muscles on both sides of your body evenly during practice. Having carpet also makes it a lot safer and more comfortable than a wooden floor, especially if you have sweaty feet.
